Odour of Chrysanthemums by D.H.Lawrence

This story is another brief description about the life of a couple which is part of the working class. These characters are immerse in a routine that is affecting their lives and relationship. The woman is the passive actor, who has to accept and assume that her husband is a disruptive element in her life. Both have been affected by their environments, destroying the pure belief that congregated them. According to our review in literature, this story is another representation of fears, solitude and death. Fears, because Elizabeth has a confusion, instead of being free of chains( because her husband has died) at the end of the narration. Solitude, because both characters are together, and alone, at the same time. Death, because she felt that her life was a new one but, she didn´t know if this situation should be an opportunity or a static state without future. These ideas have been present through our classes, death is a recurrent episode in our readings and, at the same time, in real life.

"The Rocking Horse Winner" By D.H. Lawrence.

Life has pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages, which can be represented by personal, social or family problems. According to this story, problems are in the nuclear family which is the central element in children lives. This family has been affected by a disruptive mother who can not live according to her social reality. She spends more than she has, which is the wrong operation. However, her son Paul, is growing up in this environment that affects his life. He has discovered how to ride the horse, in order to obtain the "winner". Despite of that, the idea of being a lucky person is a constant goal in their lives. Her mother has been unlucky, and Paul wants to be a lucky person to obtain money. But those ideas are in the opposite way, because life is not measurable through money, life is not measurable through luck, life is measurable according to how many kilometres have you advanced in your perfective identity. Finally, Paul, can not enjoy what he has won, her mother was the unlucky winner of her son, in terms of experiences and in terms of improving her relationships. In this case, good luck means lack of luck.

The Invisible Japanese Gentlemen By Graham Greene

This is a short story which contains many ideas and topics related to people in the same place but, in a different mental space. I mean, the idea of observing, as the narrator did, an the idea of being observed, are both components of our society, in which we are observer and observed.

As the narrator explains, the japanese gentlemen are a particular group with particular attitudes in a physical space. But, at the same time , they are a common group, as components of the same restaurant. On the other hand, the couple have the opposite side of the story, in terms of ideas and goals, but they are components of the whole, too. In other words, in isolation we are different, but when we are inmmerse, we represent the same, despite of our ideas and interests. We are part of the mass. Therefore, if you do not observe each particular case, you should not appreciate the significant differences between people. Observing you can analyse any particular case at school, any particular difference, to solve it, to correct it, as an omniscient narrator in your own book.

Frankenstein as a Social Mirror.

This novel is a unique piece of writing which was created during a romantic and dynamic social movement. While people were being absorved by political and social changes, Mary Shelley supported her thoughts into this new perspective, which promoted a fluent imagination and a sensible perspective to admire nature and historical issues through time. Her creation adopted a new form of writing, also her construction absorved those social and spiritual elements, that were her personal experiences and her cultural input. This new perspective involves concepts such as; death, birth, fears, creation and destruction. Also, the novel is a representation of social exclamations which are part of its themes. According to industrialization, people understood that their lives were changing in this cicle, that promoted interaction, in order to create new bonds between them. In other words, people reacted as agents in a society that was opressing them surprisingly.

Victor Frankenstein is the element that develops human beliefs, fears and social objectives in the novel. Victor supported a general vison about, how the world was changing, despite of its positive and negative implicancies. In fact, in those times society was acquiring a different way of thinking, criticizing injustices and economics differences. As a positive element, they reacted to diminish inequality and social abuse.

The novel gives us a wide range of interpretations, despite of that, there are common elements that has been present through time. One of those elements, is the idea of how much influence society has on individuals. Maybe it is a simple and deep question to answer. In general terms, Victor Frankenstein, the brain of the creation, developed a fluent imagination to observe and to prove the idea of create a kind of human through scientific experiments. These experiments were a challenge, in terms of facing natural and human limits. Victor administrated his knowledge, power and courage to face reason and human limits, those were the inputs that helped him to achieve his final goal; “ Te Creature”.

The creature was a real component of society and his life was restricted by society too. The creature was abandoned, while the first idea was integrate this experiment in a progressive way but, Victor reacted in a negative way because of his result. In other words, the implicit message is that society was the supportive element and the destructive one, too. While the creature was trying to participate in the world, this world was discriminating him and rejecting him. Despite of that, the creature advanced and educated himself supported by families. He observed and learnt how to survive in the world. The idea of surviving, represents a concept which has been present through years, therefore, the creature was imbued by the lack of opportunities that society and people have generated. In fact, we do not know exactly if people have survived or if they have lived into this great confusion. Moreover, society has changed but those changes has been negative expressions of decadence.

On the other hand, social input or education have promoted a restrictive and guided process of changing. Education was the first theme to integrate the creature into the world, but education and socialization determined a perspective without any future, the results were a negative output that affected the creature in his perspective. At the same time, Victor had not limits in his mind, he was advancing without any remorses, until he realized of the result. He manipulated social and natural limits affecting the natural course of life. Instead of facing the result, he escaped of it, he neglected it, producing terrible consequences in his life and people´s lives.

The idea of evading problems is another theme which has been crucial. Victor evaded his creation and his life. Hitherto, society is evading realism and people tend to use others mechanisms such as; materialism and technology to do not face the true, because reality and their lives are cruel. Victor had to face his true, but it was a hard work for him, because anybody wants to face and solve his past. Moreover, we are living in a dynamic and cruel society which prefers to escape of its state. Society is advancing without any conscious purpose and without solving destructive problems such as; global warming, pollution, wars, consumism and individualism.

Finally, Frankenstein is a mirror in which we have to appreciate ourselves. We are the creator and the creature, we have been educated and miseducated too. We are evading problems and promoting others. Wherefore are we escaping, instead of assume our lives as perfective. As creatures, we are demanding attention and help, we are demanding support and love, but it is not enough to rebuild our society. The keys are; analysis, reflection and action as the mottoes of progress and integration. Frankenstein has been a literary piece which has presented the idea of how well prepared we are to face the world as teachers and human beings.

"The Signal Man". Progress and Evolution; Involution.

The idea of progress in the Victorian age was contradictory and influential. In "The Signal Man" Dickens shows, how expansion and its changes affects society and its components. For instance, the Signal Man who works in the line, is not part of the progress. He is out of the line of progress, at the same time, he is trying to control trains but he can not do it , despite of his experience. The apparitions that affected him were an alert about how human beings will be exceed because of this modern idea of society. Social components, were influenced by this transition between progress and industralization, while some people is living, others are surviving and overcoming those changes, which are rebuilding and promoting a new society. Society is a "nuclear word", which means participation and integration, instead of exclusion and a passive state. The Signal Man offers a simple, subtle and implicit message about how we are taking part of a destructive society without any remorses.

The Birth of a Monster. Reason and Limits.

According to Woodbridge, the idea of Mary´s experiences and how these experiences affect her life in terms of thinking and writing, are important elements to clarify and analyse the text and its intentions. Most of the time, we are inmerse in a vicious circle that affects our knowledge and behaviour too. In fact, society promotes to acquire more and more knowledge, but there is a line between being reasonable and being frozen by that social input. I mean, we are like Victor who created that creature, and at the same time we are the creature who is trying to advance in this competitive world, but we do not know how to manage that intelectual power, which is affecting our life. Moreover, if do not appreciate ourselves as perfective, we could not advance in a destructive and demanding society.

Education and socialization were both the components of a cruel understanding about his reality and his life. Frankenstein realized that he was imperfect and destroyed himself. He was a representation of how people´s prejudices affect the normal process of growing. That is the reason why knowledge has to be controlled in order to acquire ideas, methods and values to support those elements which might destroy our lives.
